Monday-11:30am: Z

Zines.
****
What is that, many of you may ask?  Well, I'm not entirely positive but I keep hearing about and running across "Zines".  They seem to be a kind of handmade pamphlet that can display people's art, or can be a How To, or that contain people's poems.  I have come across several of them for sale on etsy.com.
****
Not sure if there are any guidelines or rules for making Zines.  I do intend to find out more about them.  I don't know enough to tell you much more than that.  Some of you may be more familiar with them than I am--or may have even created some.  I shall have to google and see what arises from the mass of cyber information.  ;)
****
And that is the end of the alphabet!!
TaDa!
Made it!!
I think I need a blogging break--whew!
****
A month later Miss Karma is still snoozing inside of the birthday bag Ruby brought my goodies in.
I keep moving it around from place to place and it hasn't lost its appeal so far.  Her treat ball from Tori is in there with her, too.  What a hard life, eh?  LOL!
****
Well, it's been an interesting and challenging month doing the A to Z in April.  Met some new folks, too.  Been fun!  Might have to do this again next year.  :)
****
But for now, I shall bid adieu for a short blogging break.  Till I have something to share...which is never too long with me, right?  LOL!  ;)
****
Have a great week!

Karma's little "sleeping bag" is so colorful. I love it.

Zines is short for magazines, I believe, at least that's where the term first started being shortened. They have probably morphed into something more specific now.

Enjoy your break.

Enjoy your break but don't stay away too long as we all will miss you.

That is just too cute...

Rita, i've been wanting to read more about zines too! Funny, i have it on my list of "to do's" for the week. I'm sure they're fun to do. Don't break too long from blogging - you may not want to come back. xoxo

Congratulations of finishing your A-Z quest!
Maybe I'll join in to next year, it sounded like fun.
I thought Zines were short for magazines too, but then I found out that they are actually small, self-printed magazines. You find out something new everyday.
Enjoy your break, but don't be away too long ;)
Love to you and Miss Karma!

I've never heard that term before! I'm going to have a vote for my next author picture pretty soon so don't stay gone to long. :)

A few years back, I noticed that a few artists were making Zines for sale on their websites. Basically, like home-made mini-magazines. The Zines had creative ideas and some tutorials as well as the artist sharing other bits and pieces on creativity. The 'new wave' of zines does sound similar. I don't think there are any set rules for them.

Congratulations on completing the alphabet!!!! THREE CHEERS!!!

How cute that Karma is still catching naps in the birthday bag from Ruby.

Enjoy your blog break!

Love and hugs,

I found something in your quest for zines: http://www.instructables.com/id/Guide-To-Zine-Making/

They have a lot of related content as well...so that should get you started! I had heard of them too, but wasn't really too sure what they were, but you got me curious enough to google it myself, lol!

YAY you for completing yet another month long challenge - you're doing great on those!! Is it time to get off the computer now and do some ART?? I hope so! Hugs!!!

What a great way to end the A to Z challenge by arousing curiosity about something.
Isn't a 'zine' a non-profit periodical?

Congrats for making it through the alphabet! That took commitment! If you made a zine it would have to include your wonderful sunset/sunrise photos!!

I'm curious now.... Share what you learn, OK?

YAY for completing the alphabet!

I might just do an a-z month for the sake of it (just because I can). I post every day anyway. ;)

Glad Karma's still enjoying the bag and treat ball; bet the treats are long since gone though? Even her late birthday ones? LOL! Never mind Karma; Christmas will be here soon enough! ;)

You deserve a blogging break, that was a cool April you did, Rita. Have fun hanging out with Karma and I'll see you soon... Well, "see" you in a virtual sense that is. :-)

I thin 'zines' is short for magazines, as in 'fanzines' etc.

Good for you for having finished the challenge. See you when you get back.
Daily blogging is very tiring!

Dear Rita, . . . like others who have commented, I hope you share with us what you find when you explores "zines." Also, if they are what you indicated in your posting, then you have plenty of art work--note cards, journals, paintings--to fill a "zine."

I want to thank you for so faithfully following my blog while I was taking April off. I've posted today about what I did in the past month. One of these days, I hope to be living again in Minnesota. Then maybe I can drive across the state and visit you in Fargo. That would be so wonderful!

Peace.

Hi Rita. Thanks for your note on my blog and for making a visit there! I hope I can help you a bit with the 'zines' here is a link that I used for the first zine I made. It was instructions given fr a swap I did at swap-bot and has some prompts to it but it might be helpful with showing you how to fold it. Also I find that people put what ever they feel they want into their zines. I guess that is what makes them so unique. Here is the link!http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/projects/mini_zine
Enjoy! Fran T

I am deep into making a zine at the moment... about tea of course, and it is taking up a lot of time, but I am loving it... a chance to combine words and art, just like what I love about blogging, but I get to put it onto paper... it feels really solid and real if you know what I mean, and I am loving it...
don' t take too long a break... I need a regular Rita fix !!!

I remember back in the dark ages (before the Internet) people publishing "Fan magazines" which where called Fanzines. Of course I got the geeky ones that centered around Star Trek. One that I remember was called something like "Spock's World"... and it was all about how folks imagined the planet Vulcan to be....

LOL@Sleeping Bag. She really does enjoy pounding her ear...

Congratulations on finishing the entire alphabet! Wow...I would need a break too.

There was a group on Swap-Bot that exchanges mail art - including zines. I was curious to see what they looked like, and signed up for several swaps. It's amazing - and fascinating - to see the diversity and creativity that people have in making them.

Some were very basic (one sheet folded so that it became a little book) and others were literally like miniature magazines. The topics were as varied as the zines themselves.
