Karma--keeping the wasp company yesterday.
When she wants to come in, this is what I see. She sits at the door and stares through the window at me. If I don't notice her, then she'll cry.
Well, big day yesterday! Here's the metal wall brackets (each can hold 200 lbs) and the self-drilling drywall anchors Leah picked out.
Getting the shelf unit together was a project that took a while.
Dagan and Leah worked hard. I was merely the observer and stayed out of their way.
Karma actually was hanging around by Leah during most of the procedure.
She didn't get hissy until Leah was picking up odds and ends off the floor after it was together. That was amazing for Karma. We keep hoping she'll gradually lose her anti-social attitude...that she didn't develop for some unknown reason until she was about two and we never knew why.
Anyways, once the shelf unit was together...
...then came putting half the brackets on the back...
...and the other half on the wall. Had to find the studs and do a lot of measuring...
...and then my battery went dead--LOL!
****
They were only here less than three hours--wow! And we even moved that bookcase over closer to the porch door, too. It was so warm and sticky in here, they were anxious to leave. Especially Leah because she can't stand the heat like me.
****
I was stuck here--LOL!

I was stuck here--LOL!

I had washed three loads of clothes in the morning and had just finished before Dagan and Leah got here around 2ish. It was close to 100 degrees--97 I saw one time on the TV--and I wasn't sure if the AC was failing or that wall unit just couldn't keep up with the heat and humidity.

You can see the storms that rolled through to the east later in the evening.
No rain for us, though.
And here, after I charged my camera battery, are pictures of the big change.
I love it! We moved the bookcase over and I put the floor lamp over between the TV and the art table for some extra light.
The shelf boards are stacked inside for now.
They only painted the tops and not the undersides.
Which as you can see, if I prop one in the unit, is quite the stark contrast. And that is what I would see sitting right under it all the time.
Leah and I were in total OCD agreement.
They must be painted black to match. ;)

Leah's picking up a small can of primer and a small can of black paint for me tonight when she's out doing her Monday shopping and will drop them off for me. So, you know what I'll be doing this week. ;)

Meanwhile, it did cool off in here by this morning. Apparently the AC just plain couldn't keep up yesterday. True, being on the top floor doesn't help matters...but...I learned that just maybe I shouldn't run the dryer for hours in this small apartment when it's 100 degrees outside--duh! It's supposed to be in the 80's this week, thank goodness!

Just a Note:
I am sooo far behind reading blogs. I hate to skip any, as you know, so I might have to only read and not comment on so many of them. Just so you know, okay? Even if you don't always hear from me, I am always listening. ;) I'm going to be busy this week painting and organizing those awesome shelves...(and you know how slow I am--lol!)...so I'll have less online perusing and chat time. Have a great week! TTYL :)

This shelving unit is awesome. That's why I got some white shelves. Same color on both sides.
Now you know why I hang my clothes on the clothesline in the summer. I only dry them in the winter and have the vent vented into the house for added heat and humidity. BTW, our temps have been in the 104-108 range this past week, and my little window unit couldn't keep up a couple of afternoons. I hate cooling the whole house when I'm working in one room, but sometimes that whole house AC just has to be used. So, I understand why the AC was so sluggish.
the shelf looks great! well, it will be filled up as soon as you paint those shelves, i'm sure. :)
Dear Rita, I so liked the quotation today with which you ended your posting. Going with the flow and being surprised. A good way to live.
Your shelves are going to look fantastic up above your work desk. That apartment of yours is reflecting your whole personality more and more. Peace.
Your kids did a fantastic job on the shelving unit. Everything looks great.
I love your new shelf unit! I agree, the undersides need to be black, too!
It's nice to know you're always out there reading my blog, altho comments are always appreciated! Too bad there's not a way to send someone a wave as you pass on through their blog!
I love Karma sleeping next to the wasp!
Thank goodness you have some kind of a/c in that heat, Rita. We are having wet weather ten degrees cooler than normal and have all the windows and doors closed to keep the heat IN. Why can't we have some average temperatures??? You are roasting and we are freezing.
Everything looks absolutely wonderful! WOW! And how sweet of them to help ;)
My AC has a hard time keeping up with the heat this summer. As for Karma, she developed that anti-social attitude because . . . shhhhh! she's a C-A-T, and she can have whatever attitude she likes.
Love,
Janie
I like how the shelf unit looks over the desk. Nice easy access for you. If possible, I would just flip the light side up, so when you're at your desk you'd only see the black side. But knowing your OCD, you'd "know" it didn't match and want to paint them anyway. LOL
Dagan and Leah look like they work well together! They did great with the bookcase! I do agree it will be great when it is painted! I'm sure the dryer did contribute to the heat in your apartment and the AC not being able to keep up. I know the dishwasher will do that here if I run it in the middle of the day.
betty
That is awesome you have some helpers! I still have a ton of things sitting in boxes because I can't put them together. (Patio furniture for over a year in box).
Looks great!
Wow that's awesome!! I love it, I could sit there very happily. Bless Karma, I wonder why she changed at 2?! Seems a strange age to do so, glad she seems happy to just have people around though ~ Sweepie is terrible when people come into his domain, doesn't like outsiders in the house AT ALL lol unless it's the tesco man bringing his doggie treats of course lol don't worry about not managing to comment ~ I'm getting terrible for it, I just never seem to have the time =( at the mo I'm sick so I feel like everythings piling up but usually I feel like I have to decide between time online or time creating, but still check out blogs on my iphone before bed (so I'm still reading you too, just don't trust commenting on there lol) Wow long comment, sorry lol hope you're well, give karma a scratch from me, much love Jennibellie xx
Love Karma's face looking thru the door. :)
The shelving unit looks great. The brackets and anchors look nice and sturdy and should stand up well. Nice job, Leah and Dagan.
Sure is hot out your way. I thought 90s were bad. It was very humid here yesterday (not as hot as you but still hot for us), and it's still quite humid out there this morning. We had several severe thunderstorms roll thru late yesterday afternoon, but they just made the humidity worse. It was just like a steam bath outside. I was trying to take some video of the thunderheads over the mountains and my lens fogged over from the humidity. (might get to those pics and video sometime today)
Gotta go get ready for work now. Stay cool and have a great Tuesday!
Wow! You have your own private Renovating Army right there - with Karma as Supervisor.
Pop your wasp jar into the freezer - it will go to sleep quickly, rather than taking such a long time to die. Once it's unconscious, you can release him safely, or keep him in the freezer overnight if you want him permantly dispatched.
Glad you got your unit put together and up.
I'd want to paint them too; it's why I buy natural coloured wood. ;)
Love the quote!
How nice it is that Leah and Dagan are both so helpful and good to you. People like that brighten life.
I don't blame Leah for not wanting to stay in that heat. I couldn't stand it either. I am getting less and less able to . "Only" in the 80s. We are expecting something a bit like that in London tomorrow, the first time this summer and being billed as a "heatwave" (I mean 80 not 100!) Still I am not complaining after these months of chilly rain we've had.
Strange that the undersides were left white. You would have thought that they would have been the same colour.
They look great though, I really need something to keep all of my bits and pieces in one place. My work table is not big enough anymore.
Have a great week!
Have you finished your shelving paint job yet? I agree, the bottom of the shelves need to be black. The whole area is looking terrific tho. (Minus a wasp!)
Darla
The shelves look great! Leah and Dagan did a great job! I am not looking forward to the heat and humidity of summer returning. Too bad you missed the storm to cool things down a bit.
Very useful shelves and what a useful family too:)
Nice to know you are looking in..comfort from SoulCmfort's Corner:)
Was very hot here yesterday, but we have some clouds today which helps.
I always feel cheated when we see big, dark clouds and then it doesn't rain.
Wishing you well!
xx
karma is a delight as always ~ Your art area looks awesome now ~ Wonderful that you have your Young Adults to help ~ Looking good ~~ namaste, (A Creative Harbor)
ps. Heat got to me too! ~ Nope wouldn't run the dryer if it was a 100 degrees ~ doesn't help ~ LOL
I think you could hire Dagan and Leah out... they did a cracking job putting that together and it looks great... but boy do those shelve bottoms need painting... how can they leave them unprimed... hate that... you will have it set to rights in no time...xx
Wow! That shelf came out superduper!! Leah oughta be building her house!
